Leather Size Guide: What sq ft and m² Mean

Leather Size Guide - What sq ft and m² Mean

When buying leather online, one of the most common questions is simple - how big is the piece?
Some customers are familiar with square feet (sq ft), while others prefer square meters (m²). To make this easier for both American and European customers, we include a size chart in every listing, providing approximate dimensions in both centimeters and inches.

What does sq ft mean?

sq ft means square feet, a unit used to measure area.
It indicates the usable surface area of the leather, rather than a fixed length and width.

What does m² mean?

m² means square meters, which is the metric version of area measurement and is more common in Europe.

Both units describe the same thing - the total surface area of the leather.

  • 1 sq ft = 0.093 m²
  • 1 m² = 10.76 sq ft

Why are leather sizes approximate?

Leather is a natural material, so each piece has its own shape. It is not always a perfect rectangle, which is why dimensions are shown as approximate usable area.

Please note - the usable area may vary by +/- 5 cm (2 inches) due to the natural shape and characteristics of the leather.

Why do we add a size chart to every listing?

Our customers shop from different countries and use different measurement systems.
By showing approximate dimensions in cm and inches, we help buyers better understand the size of the leather before ordering.

This is especially useful for projects such as wallets, bags, belts, notebook covers, watch straps, and other leathercraft work.

Approximate leather size chart

Understanding leather size becomes much easier when you look at both the area and the approximate dimensions.
That is why every Leather AA listing includes a size chart — to help both US and European customers choose the right leather with confidence.
